Water and Life
Water and Life: Women, Rights, and Environment, Inc. (Agua y Vida: Mujeres, Derechos y Ambiente A.C.) is dedicated to the interdependence and comprehensiveness of human rights. Agua y Vida contends that we cannot enjoy any other rights without a guaranteed right to water – in quality, quantity, and accessibility.
We devote our human, technical, and academic capabilities to improving the living conditions of women, because they are the primary custodians of and users of water. Also, they are ones who take responsibility for other aspects of the ecosystem.
Our work takes place in Chiapas, a southern Mexican state rich in water, petroleum, minerals, and forests. This diversity and richness are in danger due to national and international economic interests, which – protected by inadequate governmental policies – intensify conditions of poverty, exclusion, dependence, illness, marginalization, and violence, where women and girls are the most affected.
Women of all ages are tireless fighters for life to continue as full and abundant. They do not allow themselves to be swept away by the current: they are steadfast and determined, creative and visionary. They commit and organize themselves to seek alternatives to inequality, poverty, and discrimination.
